State of Phones in 2024

The iPhone was launched in 2007. It was undoubtfully a revolutionaty product that changed the whole tech industry, and forced many other companies to rethink about their portable device lineups until this day. It was the first multitouch device. Without the iPhone, we would probably still have new Nokia or Blackberry devices with big keyboards under the screen, until now. Maybe Microsoft would still have phones with Windows on them as well.

Google realized this early on, and quickly tried to react buy acquiring and continuing the development on Android to compete, and pull the carpet from underneath Apple. It was probably late for them in the US, but at least, they managed to prevent Apple dominance in the other parts of the world that couldn't afford the iPhones at that time.

Then, each year, companies would flex their muscles by releasing their new flagships. Apple with the iPhone and their well integrated eco-system, Samsung with their Galaxy series and their latest and greatest hardware, especially screens. Google later with Nexus, and now Pixel, and few other companies, especially from Asia. We could see the improvement each year, with really big difference in software or hardware capabilities from the previous generation. iPhone 6 for example was a huge jump from iPhone 5, even if it looked a little bit similar. The same with other phones.

Then over the years, we started to see that smartphones to get similar, and their capabilities improve much slower than before. iPhone 15 is not really much different than iPhone 11. You cannot tell the difference between them. The same with other companies. The biggest reason for a customer to upgrade their phone was probably because their older phone is not working, or because they have some extra money to spend. Companies struggled to find reasons to market their phones that are getting more and more expensive. I seriously never thought that phones can reach over 1200$ at some point.
